Purpose of Qualification

This Qualification reflects workplace-based needs in the wider Freight Handling Industry, both now and for the future. Freight Handling is diverse in its nature, so a fairly wide range of competencies are required by employees. The Qualification aims to provide the foundational and initial skills required for an individual in the industry to handle freight successfully; be an effective team member and undertake those tasks required to contribute to the effective processing of freight. This qualification also prepares learners to operate as a Freight handler who receives, allocates stores, picks, reconciles and dispatches freight through a storage facility.

Entry requirements

NSC, SC or NC(V) at NQF Level 2

A qualified learner will be able to:

  • Receive freight
  • Allocate freight for storage and control stock
  • Pick freight
  • Reconcile and dispatch freight

This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge and Practical Skill Modules:

Knowledge Modules:

  1. Freight Handler theory, NQF Level 3, Credits 33
  2. Health, Safety, Quality and Legislation, NQF Level 3, Credits 1
  3. Environment, Energy Efficiency and Ethics, NQF Level 3, Credits 1
  4. Communication Theory, NQF Level 3, Credits 1

Practical Skill Modules:

  1. Receiving of freight, NQF Level 3, Credits 5
  2. Allocating freight for storage, NQF Level 4, Credits 5
  3. Picking of freight, NQF Level 3, Credits 5
  4. Reconciling of freight, NQF Level 3, Credits 5
  5. Dispatching of freight, NQF Level 3, Credits

Total number of credits for Practical Skill Modules: 26

This qualification also requires the following

Work Experience Modules:

  1. Processes and procedures to receive freight and observe operational requirements relating to freight handling: stevedoring or warehousing or bulk cargo or courier or airfreight operations, NQF Level 3, Credits 12
  2. The organizational freight allocation processes, systems and procedures, NQF Level 4, Credits 12
  3. The practices of picking of freight accurately as per customer requirements, NQF Level 3, Credits 12
  4. Processes and procedures to reconcile freight correctly as per customer order requirements, NQF Level 3, Credits 12
  5. The dispatching of freight practices as per customer, legislative and organizational Requirements, NQF Level 3, Credits 12

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

This qualification enables both horizontal and vertical articulation

  • National certificate in freight forwarding and customs compliance, NQF level 3
  • VERTICAL OPTION
  • Occupational certificate: air line ground crew, NQF level 4.
