Knott's Berry Farm was a family owned business until the 1990's. It started when a relative invited Walter and Cordelia Knott to move to Buena Park, California to work on their berry farm. Walter Knott worked the red raspberry fields in the 1920's and him and Cornelia set up a roadside farm stand to sell the berries. In 1927 the opportunity presented for them to purchase the land. They built a permanent building to sell their crops along with jams and jellies. In 1928 they opened a tearoom and berry market and by the 1930's it had grown into a restaurant. In 1934 Walter had discovered an experimental berry, earlier developed by Rudolph Boysen but later abandoned. Knott produced a big crop of the large berries and named them "boysenberries." Those boysenberries put the Knott's farm on the map. With more and more people coming to the restaurant, Walter decided he needed to entertain the folks waiting in line. The rest is history, "Knott's Berry Farm Park" was opened and is now a a 57-acre theme park located in Buena Park, California. On December 3, 1981, Walter Knott died, survived by his children, they continued to run Knott's as a family business for another fourteen years. In the 1990's, after Walter and Cordelia died, their children decided to sell off their businesses. The theme park was renamed the Knott's Berry Farm Resort & Hotel in 2004 (owned by Cedar Fair). The food specialty business was originally sold to ConAgra Inc, which later re-sold the brand to The J.M. Smucker Company in 2008.
