The Castaways opened in 1952 in Sunny Isles, Miami Beach, FL. In 1958, came an expansion with added rooms and, what became its signature draw, the Wreck Bar. Both the hotel and bar had a tropical, South Pacific/Polynesian theme that included a cascading waterfall at the hotel entrance, the bar had a shipwreck motif with portholes that allowed people to see into the pool, captain’s chairs, solid oak floors and brass fixtures. People loved this kitschy, "happening" spot with the "Wreckettes", 12 dancing, bikini clad, go-go style girls. Many famous artists came to perform like: Tina Turner, Conway Twitty, Wayne Cochran & the Kingsmen, KC & The Sunshine Band, and The Monkees. Others came to experience it all like: Lenny Bruce, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and even the Beatles. Unfortunately Miami Beach took a bad turn in the 1970's, and tourism declined. The owner, Joe Hart, sold the motel and its famous bar in 1979 to a German group but eventually they closed March 14, 1982 and was completely demolished in 1985.
